“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11
We’ve processed our last batch of broilers, moved the cows into their newest pasture and gathered our last few baskets of eggs. We attempt to fit our belongings into boxes and onto a trailer, ready to embark on our next adventure. If you’d asked us five years ago what our plans for the future included–my answer would not have been farming. But that’s just it. They are not my plans but His. Once we stepped out in faith and followed where God was leading us, everything fell into place and we have been blessed beyond measure to work with everyone at Polyface these past two years.
Now, as the Season changes, so does our path. We find ourselves leaving Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley. I will miss this landscape which has become such an integral part of our life. We syncopate our day to its natural rhythms. We wake to the sun rising above the venerable red barn and end our day to its setting over and behind Apple Tree Hill. We finish morning chores while the misty fog fills in between hills and lifts to reveal dewy pastures and we lay our heads on our pillows as the stars shine bright embedded in the black blanket of sky covering the Valley . I’ve come to now this place by the smell of the air, the leaves, the dirt. This place has come to know me and change me.
When my Dad passed away and I was left hurt and sad and angry, the land seemed to grieve with me, first drying up then submitting to ice and snow and finally letting go. And when Spring came, everything celebrated the birth of our youngest with us and I came to understand what seasons mean.
How do you leave a place that is a part of you? How can we choose to silence the loud soft loud soft song of the crickets in summer, put out the blinking lights of the June fireflies and abandon the snow blanketed pastures of winter?
“So if you faithfully obey the commands I am giving you today—to love the Lord your God and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul—then I will send rain on your land in its season, both autumn and spring rains, so that you may gather in your grain, new wine, and olive oil. I will provide grass in the fields for your cattle, and you will eat and be satisfied.” Deuteronomy 11:13-15
Our Faith has brought us this far and has blessed us with so much, what can we do but continue to follow where the Lord leads? We still have so much to learn and desire to be the impetus to change lives. We know we will continue to be blessed beyond measure as long as we follow His lead. While it is painful to leave friends, family, and community behind, we are excited and strengthened by what lies ahead.

Thank you so much for joining me on Sundays as I tried to share a little bit of our life with you. I encourage you to follow your dreams. Doing so has changed our life and our legacy. And a HUGE thanks goes to Joel, Missy, Daniel and Sheri…without you, without your vision, dedication and faith in us, this amazing life would not be possible.
