Out on pasture where we have our broiler chickens, we had the opportunity to witness how one creature goes through several different forms throughout it’s life.

The farm provides an ideal setting for such valuable, real lessons. Like on our first butcher day when Nicolaus realized the chickens we had been raising from little chicks were now going to be killed in order to become food. While so many of us battle spiritually and emotionally with “purpose,” both my five and four year old seemed quickly content with Mommy and Daddy’s explanation about how we are farmers now and part of our job includes killing the animals we raise for food (chime in “The Circle of Life” music now).

But in all honesty, there is just something about this kind of life that really changes you…the way you feel, think and live.

“God changes caterpillars into butterflies, sand into pearls and coal into diamonds using time and pressure. He’s working on you too.” — Pastor Rick Warren
