You know the childhood taunt “sticks and stones will break my bones but words will never hurt me?” Those words couldn’t be farther from the truth. Words can hurt, but they can also build you up. The tiniest compliment or words of encouragement can turn someone’s day around and you may not even know it.
The other morning I was exhausted from middle-of-the-night newborn wakings and feeling overwhelmed with what needed to be accomplished for the day. Out of nowhere Nicolaus says, “Mommy, you’re so pretty with your hair up and holding the baby.” You can imagine how wonderful his words made me feel.
At the grocery store yesterday, after a morning of time-outs and tantrums and questioning every parenting decision I’ve ever made, a total stranger complimented me on how beautiful my children are and how great was the sound of their laughter. Her brief words completely turned my day around.
I challenge you today to share a kind word with someone. Whether a stranger or a family member, you never know the positive impact your words will have.
“Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.” Ephesians 4:29
