The Story Part: 4

So after three pleasant months of working with Eric after Christmas break, I found myself, on April 6th out helping him move, feed, and water, the first broiler pens of the season.
We had finished the broilers and were about to get on the 4 wheeler when Eric started taking off his gloves.  I noticed his hands shaking as he asked if he could talk to me about something.  I wasn’t sure what he would need to talk to me about to make his hands shake.  I didn’t have to wait long to find out.  Eric told me that he had admired me for some time and he had been seeking the Lord in what to add to his life now that he was a permanent staff member at Polyface.  To him, farming is not just a job, but a life style and a life style doesn’t just include a job.  He wondered if I would consider taking our relationship to the next level in a courtship!  I was so shocked I couldn’t get anything out of my mouth except, “Wow, I am shocked.”  This was the substance of my wildest dreams and in this moment my dreams were becoming a reality and I was blown away by them coming to life.  Even now I am still trying to grasp how the Lord likes to work.  When we are walking with Him, He finds pleasure in fulfilling our dreams and desires.
3 weeks of courting!
Well, I didn’t have too long to try and gather my thoughts before two tourists came walking up.  They had no idea what had just happened so they asked questions and talked with Eric for about 10 minutes while I randomly smiled and nodded my head while trying to process that, not only had Eric known I existed, but he admired me! The couple finally left and we talked for a little while.  Looking back, I am not positive I spoke the word “yes”.  I was still too overwhelmed with happiness, but that was okay, because after almost two years of working together, he had learned to read me.  He knew I meant “yes”. 🙂

We spent the rest of the day working on a project by ourselves, not because we planned it that way. 🙂  Every once in a while I would put a piece of our puzzle together and ask Eric timeline questions like, “Is this why my dad has called me, for no reason, 4 times this week?”  Later in the day Eric asked me if I was at peace about starting this relationship.  I told him that I could act spiritual and tell him I had to “go pray about it”, but I had been praying about this and him since the day I set foot on the farm.  I was at peace.

The next week was the strangest I have ever experience.  With this revelation that Eric liked me, I had no desire to eat and hardly slept for 6 days!  Thankfully, I returned to normal (kind of) after that first week.  Our first 5 weeks were really special as we soaked in the joy of this new found relationship and laughed at finding out how hypersensitive we both had been for so long about the other person.  With being co-workers for the past 22 months, we had lots of interactions and happenings with each other and we both remembered them all!  The freedom and peace our relationship brought between the two of us was welcomed as we got to know each other on a deeper level.    It was also a relief to our confidants around the farm. 🙂

Time flew by and June 1st came, accompanied by the welcome arrival of 7 new interns who were eager to learn.   By the end of the month they were settled in enough to allow Eric and I to take a surprise visit home to my family.  It was a nice long weekend and we were very appreciative of our boss Daniel letting us take time off.

About Leanna Hale

Leanna Barth, born and raised in NC, first came to Polyface in July 2010 to attend one of the Intensive Discovery Seminars. She loved it so much that she applied for an internship position and was accepted for the 2011 season, after which she took the inventory/gardener position. Before coming to Polyface, she sold produce from her family’s market garden, along with homemade baked goods. This venture was mostly inspired by having read “You Can Farm” by Joel Salatin. Having always loved the outdoors, animals, and gardening Leanna is excited about this coming year, all that she will learn, and how the Lord will use this job later on in her life.

I always love a good love story! Your story is so sweet. You should get all the farm chicks (that are married) to tell their stories too!
