That Sweet Smell is…

Almost everywhere I walking around the farm these last couple weeks I have been encompassed by the sweet smell of the wild honey suckles.  I don’t remember them being this abundant last year, but I am sure enjoying them!

About Leanna Hale

Leanna Barth, born and raised in NC, first came to Polyface in July 2010 to attend one of the Intensive Discovery Seminars. She loved it so much that she applied for an internship position and was accepted for the 2011 season, after which she took the inventory/gardener position. Before coming to Polyface, she sold produce from her family’s market garden, along with homemade baked goods. This venture was mostly inspired by having read “You Can Farm” by Joel Salatin. Having always loved the outdoors, animals, and gardening Leanna is excited about this coming year, all that she will learn, and how the Lord will use this job later on in her life.

I’ve got lots blooming but I don’t know what is what. I have honeysuckle in my yard that is blooming but those bushes were planted there so I can’t call them wild. I have lots of what my husband classifies as weeds growing in my flower beds but they are pretty and blooming so I don’t care. They’re wildflowers to me… lol! My lawn is full of plantain… again husband is displeased but I don’t mind- plantain is useful. Dandelions have slowed but I don’t mind those either. I love to pick the leaves and flowers and throw them to our “teenage” chickens. I’m waiting for the chickweed and bee balm that grows wild in our “back 40” to bloom.

We too have a lot of wild honey suckle around our yard…white pink and some yellow. What has recently been scenting the air is the dames rocket or wild phlox and the mock orange shrubs. We once lived in a house that had 20 foot mock orange shrubs on the side by the house and dames rocket suroounding the whole property as well..what a heavenly scent that was! Alas the township bought the place later on and tore down the house and tore out all of the plant life…including an amazing huge shrub rose that had wonderful pink buds that bloomed a pristine white and smelled glorious.

  3. Lots of wild rose happening around here. Beautiful smell. Blackberries have started blossoming in a big way just the last day or two. Dogwoods seem to be pretty much over.
