I’m so excited! And I think that you moms out there will understand pretty quickly why.
Have you noticed that things seem to congregate next to your front door? In our house, it’s boots, jackets, gloves, hats, bags, and because of our wood stove – firewood. It’s a constant battle. Me against the disorganized mess. I don’t care how many times I clean my house, this spot always seems to gather everything in the house.
So I tried to organize this small area using blue recycle bins – it worked okay, but certainly wasn’t very attractive. And of course, we still had to dig around each been looking for that other glove. The boots didn’t fit in the bins, so they were still piled up around the door.
With five people in the family and then the farm boys and gals on top of that…well you can imagine.
So my dear hubby measured the space and custom built these (without my asking!!!)
Aren’t they awesome?
Now each kid has his/her own section. Boots have a place and there’s even room for the firewood at the bottom. I’m in love.
Doesn’t take much to make me happy, and this set of shelves is good enough to be my Valentine’s day gift!! Even if a little early. You’re not gonna hear this girl complaining!!
And just for fun..here’s a picture of this morning on the farm

that is SO lovely!! you are blessed! enjoy your new found order..
We moved our farm in November and as our priorities were making the animals comfortable and battling winter, we have not unpacked our house more than the “essentials”. Together we organized the larder on Tuesday, I’m tackling the laundry room/my sewing room today. And perhaps tomorrow we’ll start our library (which will be the biggest task). It’s full steam ahead on the house because once spring hits, we’re outside!
I love your new organizer. I have the same issues at our front door. There is a coat rack (that rarely gets used) and a low shelf unit for shoes (that rarely gets used. there is invariable a mountain of flannel shirts and sweatshirts in the chair closest to the door. A mountain of shoes just inside the door and “stuff” spewing off the little shelf unit. One day I will find a good solution. This zone remains a work in progress.
I must, must, must have a buck shelter built and a door on the barn stall before my goats kid in a few weeks! We have the pen ready, but nowhere for them to sleep yet! I’m hoping that’s on the agenda for tomorrow, well, that and finalizing our plans to come take a Lunatic Tour this summer! I can’t wait!! http://www.greeneggsandgoats.com
We had the same problem! With 3 adults and 5 kids in our house the front door area was SCARY! I purchased an over the door shoe holder for all the hats, gloves, scarves, etc and it has been fantastic! We have a long hallway like front entry so my husband purchased two extendable shoe racks and lined them along the wall. Boots on tops, regular shoes on bottom. It was such an easy simple fix I don’t know why we didn’t do it sooner! I smiled that you said this was your early Valentines present because my husband has told me to make my honey do list and his present to me is that he’s made arrangements for the kids to be gone for the day and he and I are going to tackle that list for the day. I’m super excited! Love those handy-men!
Wow! I’m impressed. That’s a great organizer. Without asking??? I’m even more impressed. Enjoy!
How fun! I’m with ya on how the simple things can make you so happy! My husband built me a similar structure in our porch, for our shoes and boots. Funny how a piece of dirty plywood can make a girl so happy!!! Enjoy your organized space!
Love the new organizer! Great Valentine’s Day gift in my book.
On the fridge I actually have my “Honey’s” list going. And funny it also has to do with organizing. We moved to a much smaller(over 1000 sq ft.) home back in October and I am trying to make the best of the smaller space.
Way to go, Daniel!
Oh boy do I have the same issue, except our entryway that is preferred is also our laundry room. And yep just as often as I clean it gets messy twice as fast. Right now my Honey Do List includes putting up a clothes line to cut on energy costs. Plus clothes smell so good when they have been dried outside. Your hubby did a great job on those shelves!!!
I love it! Looks great! I need one too, our front door area is always a disaster.
We have a full day scheduled tomorrow; my children have both been sick all week. Tomorrow we are stripping and disinfecting the new ewe/lamb stall and putting in a swing pallet door between the two stalls. Stripping 2 goat stalls and disinfecting, moving feeders, cutting new mats for one of the stalls and putting up a temporary fence for the chickens so I can reseed their pasture under the trees.
I love the shelf your husband built for you! I am going to show it to my husband.
Thank you for the sharing and inspirations <3
You’ve trained him so well that you don’t even have to ask! What a guy!
You’re right, this is a problem area for us too – looks like your problem is solved. It looks great!
Awesome organizer! Love it. We come in through our garage door and everything gets plopped on the kitchen bar counter or on the dining room floor. I routinely take “pick up” tours of the house through out the day to deposit dropped items in the appropriate rooms. Our winter boots get arranged in the laundry room right off the garage but I’m the one who puts them there after others leave them in kitchen area. I could train people to put things away but I’m not so secretly a little bit OCD and would rather do it myself. On my honey-do list is having my husband hang pictures and paintings etc. up on the walls of our “new” to us house (eight months ago!) He is rather OCD about where and how pictures hang but has yet to tackle the project. Well, maybe during his springs vacations if there is still snow covering the garden areas.

I was looking at this picture the other day. It looks so nice! I like to be organized, but unfortunately the kids don’t. LOL After last nights winds, my honey do list now has my hubby putting our kids’ play structure upright and assembling a new one. No fun! It will have to wait until his return from Kenya though. One more month to go!
We have 8 people in our home….yup lots of stuff, even if we try and live a simple life. Top of the list finish the summer kitchen! Looking forward to canning season without heating up the big house.
We bought 5 acres last June. We are trying to get it up and running with pastured eggs, grass-fed lamb and a huge garden, all the while improving its beauty and function for a big open house anniversary party this June…The honey-do list is long around here…4 kids homeschool, and farming…Love the shelf, it looks like nest boxes! Super cute.
Love that space he built you! Our immediate list consists of building a bigger chicken coop for all of the new chickens we just got and fencing for the turkeys and then on to fencing for some goats we hope to get this summer!
