Happy 30 Years, Joel

Yesterday we had the pleasure of celebrating Joel and the day he quit his job at the newspaper to come home and farm full-time in 1982. It was a day full of laughing and tears!

Several of us ran around the farm at 5:00 am, tying balloons on everything he would come across in his day – the mailbox, the chainsaw, the four-wheeler….

In the evening, we celebrated with a simple cookout in front of the sales building. We made toasts to Joel, his wife Teresa and mother Lucille, and then presented him with the book of well-wishes that many of you contributed to on our Facebook page. More happy tears followed! It was a memorable day for all of us.

Thank you, Joel, for your commitment to your convictions, especially on those days when farming felt the furthest thing from a celebration. We appreciate you!

About Brie Aronson

Brie Aronson came to Polyface from southern California. During college, she was diagnosed with food allergies and had to begin asking about the source of every single thing she put in her mouth. This led to an interest in all things food and she sought out a way to learn how it can be produced ethically and sustainably. Her desire is to help people shift their focus from counting calories, being intimidated by their kitchens, and being disconnected from the land to one that experiences the life-giving enjoyment of food. Having completed the internship in summer 2010, she now assists with the buying clubs and sales building, leads school tours of the farm, and will be the summer 2012 farm cook.

Thank you, Joel! You are inspiration to us here at Fresh Pasture Farms. We would never have embarked on this life-changing journey that has touched so many in our ‘neck of the woods’ had it not been for your pioneering spirit – the one who went before and paved the way. Our son has been forever changed because of you and we are grateful! God’s richest blessings as you continue to follow the path the Lord lays before you.

Brie, thank you for all you guys did for Joel. I figured you were probably up all night putting up balloons. I know it all meant a great deal to him. So from the city-dwelling sister, many thanks to all of you.

Thank you to Joel and to all of you at Polyface for the inspiration and innovative models!

  5. Congrats to Joel and all the Polyface people. I was just reading the back pages of Pastured Poultry Profits – the newsletters from the 1980’s/90’s – the Jan 1984 letter talks about raising 300 broilers, and having three beef animals ready for processing in June. Oh and some veggies and maybe firewood. As the old commercial used to say….You’ve come a long way, baby!
