Potato Harvest
avatar

Last week we started harvesting the potatoes that we planted in straw back in March.  We have been digging a few for meals around here, but last Thursday we attacked the potato patch in all seriousness with great success.

Potatoes!

The picture above is what we found and we still have a few more to harvest too!

Anyone want to take a guess at how many pounds of potatoes are on the wagon? 🙂

About Leanna Hale

Leanna Barth, born and raised in NC, first came to Polyface in July 2010 to attend one of the Intensive Discovery Seminars. She loved it so much that she applied for an internship position and was accepted for the 2011 season, after which she took the inventory/gardener position. Before coming to Polyface, she sold produce from her family’s market garden, along with homemade baked goods. This venture was mostly inspired by having read “You Can Farm” by Joel Salatin. Having always loved the outdoors, animals, and gardening Leanna is excited about this coming year, all that she will learn, and how the Lord will use this job later on in her life.

    About 450 pounds…

  2. JD Kimbrell says:

Planted in straw? Could you take a moment and tell me what that means? Type slow, I don’t read very fast. Thank you so much in advance.

    Very Respectfully,

  3. I’m going with 900 lbs!

  4. Nita says:

    I’ll say 325#

  5. Joe Bergfeld says:

I would say 1200 in all

  6. I’m guessing 300 lbs. And they look great!

  7. I would guess each of the 11 containers weigh about 50 pounds. Any more and those big trays would be too heavy to manage. In fact, the boxes may be more like 30 pounds. That should put you in the range of 470-550 pounds. And since nobody guessed 500 yet…

Wow, looks like a great harvest. I am very interested in trying planting potatoes in straw next yeat. Can you give some more information on your method?

  9. Clint says:

What was your final yield for the 300 pounds planted? Would you say it was less or about the same as if you had planted in dirt?

    • Leanna says:

Not sure how it compares to planting in the dirt since this was the first time I had planted potatoes here. Next year I should have a control section to see if there is any difference.

  10. Leilani says:

    435# and they look great!

  11. Leanna says:

493 pounds so far! There is still a fair number to harvest too!
