Our Engagement Story~
Ben had been planning his proposal to me with the help our dear friends Buddy and Jill ! They live on a beautiful farm nearby and had invited us over for a cook-out Sunday evening. Their farm has a hill where one can see mountains on either side ~ it’s breathtaking!
After chores Sunday afternoon, Ben and I drove to Buddy and Jill’s farm and helped them finish chores. Afterwards we packed up Jill’s cute picnic basket and headed up the hill. Ben picked a beautiful spot and we set up our picnic blanket and the guys built a campfire.
We all enjoyed hanging out together and roasting hot dogs over the fire. The sun set behind the clouds, and the lights of Staunton could be seen in the distance.
Someone mentioned marshmallows, and we realized Buddy & Jill had forgotten to bring up the food to make s’mores. They left on a four-wheeler, leaving Ben and me by the campfire. The mountains could be seen on the horizon, and the campfire gave out a beautiful glow.
Ben reached over and gave me a hug, putting his arms around me. I could sense his hands moving behind me and then suddenly he was on one knee and holding a ring~
“Kristen, will you marry me?”
I was so amazed and overwhelmed with joy that I began to cry. I even forgot to answer him until he asked me what my answer was!
We enjoyed that special moment, just the two of us. Making a memory and pausing to take in everything is so precious. Ben and I prayed together and then called Buddy and Jill!
They arrived on the four-wheeler and were so excited and happy for us! I began to cry again when I hugged Jill ~ this was really happening! They surprised both of us with fireworks, which was so fun to watch on top of the hill.
The evening was perfect ~ September 25, 2011.
Jill is a wedding photographer and has her own business! She brought her camera and with Buddy holding a flashlight, they were able to capture those first moments on the hill.
Later when we were back at the house, Jill shot some more beautiful photos! Isn’t she amazing? Thank you so much, Jill!
The ring is perfect! It was Ben’s grandmother’s engagement ring, and I am blessed to wear it. Ben is so thoughtful.
I called my parents that night and told them about the whole evening. Ben had received their blessing prior to proposing to me, and my family is so happy for us!
We spent the next day calling and writing our family and friends and then went to Lexington, Va. to have the ring sized and see our sweet friend and “Polyface patron saint” Liz L. Lexington has a cute little downtown area and it was a memorable visit!
Ben and I are planning to marry in 2012 and manage DoubleB Acres, LLC! We are so thankful to the Lord and for our loving family and friends!
