This is the first of three posts about the gals interning here this summer. Michelle, Tarah, and Leanna are some of the sweetest and hard-working people, and it is a pleasure to have them at Polyface. Here is the first “intern-view” where you will meet Michelle.
Kristen: Michelle, what got you interested in farming?
Michelle: My dad, and then I always liked the countryside so much better than the city. We came to the farm to hear Joel speak and I thought it was great but it wasn’t necessarily for me. Then I took a lunatic farm tour and Joel was talking about the pigaerator pigs in the Far Barn and I was like “Ah ha! That’s what it is!”
Kristen: What is your favorite farm animal and why?
Michelle: Pigs! I love the pigs because first of all they are so fun and curious when they are alive and then when they are dead they taste delicious.
Tarah: She’s a bacon fiend.
Michelle: I am.
Kristen: What is your favorite chore on the farm?
Michelle: Well, some days I wake up and I’m like “I really want to feed the broilers today” and I love it. And some days I wake up and I’m like “I really want to water the broilers today.” But I never wake up wanting to move them. (giggles)
Kristen: So is that your favorite chore on the farm?
Michelle: Oh, in the evening? Yes, I love gathering and washing eggs – except when that temperamental hen tries to peck my hand.
Kristen: In a few words, how would you describe what Polyface means to you?
Michelle: What Polyface means to me? Ok, in a few words…. (ponders). Um, right now it describes my life and it’s simple and it’s hard but it’s so rewarding and I just feel so enlivened by it!
Kristen: What is something that most people don’t know about you?
Michelle: Um… sorry this is taking so long…ok, I’m just going to think of something random…. ok, coffee make me go crazy – no… but not all the time.
Kristen: What has been your favorite memory of working on the farm?
Michelle: A good memory is… emphasis on the “a,” is the day when I was really tired at lunchtime and Ian made coffee (laughs) and he made it so strong and I had two whole cups because I didn’t know how strong he made it and then I had so much energy and I was just going so so fast! Oh! Andalso when I drove the tractor and Oh! When Dan cooks really good food at night and I’m so hungry. Oh, and there’s also a day when I picked up a really heavy axle and I looked really cool doing it. Oh, the day my tricep was sore which meant that my muscles were growing. (laughs)
